The beginning

Born on December 10, 1961. Raised in London, England before moving to Canada at age 12, where running took over from soccer.

“A new country, a new start — and the first steps of a lifelong run.”

Turning point

Soccer to running

Running took over from soccer and set the course for everything after.

1977

Finding the hurdles

At 16, a high school coach suggests the 110m hurdles — nobody else did them, so making the team was easy. A career is born.

110m

Ten barriers, one straight line. The event nobody wanted became the one he couldn't stop thinking about.

Age 16

A late start by most standards — but raw speed and a stubborn streak made up for lost time.

Day one

Bruised shins, borrowed spikes and endless reps after class — the routine that built everything that followed.

1982

International breakthrough

Wins gold in the 110m hurdles and silver in the 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games.

Years of early-morning sessions and relentless technical refinement came together in a single summer. Against seasoned rivals and under a global spotlight, the hurdles title proved that raw talent had matured into championship form — and the relay silver showed a competitor who thrived as part of a team.

“That was the day the world started watching.”

GOLD

110m hurdles — a commanding run that announced a new force on the world stage.

SILVER

4x100m relay — sharing the podium with teammates in a race decided by fractions.

BRISBANE

Commonwealth Games, Australia — the first major international championship.

1984

Los Angeles Olympics

Finishes 4th in the 110m hurdles at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Under the summer lights of the Memorial Coliseum, the final came down to fractions of a second. Missing the podium by the narrowest of margins became a turning point — fuel for the years of training, discipline and hunger that followed.

“Fourth place teaches you more than any medal ever could.”

Defending a title is harder than winning it. Four years on, with every rival studying his race, he stayed composed over the barriers and crossed first once more — then joined his teammates to bring home a second gold on the relay track.

1988

Seoul Olympics

Reaches the Olympic final in the 110m hurdles at the Seoul Games.

Years of early mornings and relentless training led to this moment. Lining up beside the fastest hurdlers on the planet, in front of a packed Olympic stadium, the race became a defining chapter of a career built on rhythm, speed and nerve.

“Ten barriers, one lane, and the whole world watching.”
